Stoned

"Stoned," a poem written when I was a junior in high school nearly thirty years ago is of value as a testament to what the author wallowed through and (in combination with later poems such as "The Convert" or "The Day of Gray Laughter") just how far Christ's amazing grace has brought me.

Why can't you remember your name?
Is it not the same as when you came?
The boy isn't dumb—he's as smart as they come
It's just one of his highs, you can tell by his eyes
The student isn't stupid, he's just stoned
Yes
Helplessly
Hopelessly
Fearlessly
Foelessly
We all know that he's
S t o n e d

Why do you lay there on your ass?
Can't you see the sign, KEEP OFF THE GRASS?
Obviously not, 'cause you're reeking of pot
You leave us no doubt
when you're always passing out
This degenerate isn't dead—he's just stoned
Yes
Darelessly
Prayerlessly
Carelessly
Farelessly
We're all aware that he's
S t o n e d

Why must you keep stuffing your face?
The way you slobber is such a disgrace
He doesn't realize his stomach's twice its old size
His mind is long gone but his mouth carries on
The fiend isn't fat—he's just stoned
Yes
Fearlessly
Beerlessly
Carelessly
Car-lessly
We all saw that he's
S t o n e d

You'd really better slow down your pace
That girl has long since fallen from grace
When she eats, she is neat—but she only eats meat
If your advance doesn't ease
you're gonna get a disease
You may be going for broke
but you're making her choke!
The poor boy isn't perverted—he's just stoned
Yes
Increasingly
Unceasingly
Persistently
Consistently
Haplessly
Hopelessly
Friendlessly
Foelessly

He cannot cope with it
'cause he's all doped on it
He said he could resist it
But it's not fun—and he missed it
All our warnings he hears
But they fall on stoned ears
A head's hard to reach
When you don't practice what you preach
So when we bitch, he don't listen
But his chapped lips smile,
and his red eyes glisten
For ... although WE may be pros
The expression still shows
Yes, I'm afraid HE knows we're all
