Irish Finish Stumbling Rutgers 73-66

Clutch senior Colin Falls scored 22 points to lead the 22nd ranked Irish to a 73-66 victory over their Scarlet Knight hosts Saturday in Piscataway, (New Jersey that is!).

The victory clinched Notre Dame a first round bye in the upcoming Big East Tournament, but also assured that Rutgers, 10-19 and losers of 12 of their last 14, would not make the playoff and that their season was ended.

Notre Dame jumped to a quick 6-0 lead and never trailed. After being down by 14, the Scarlet Knights fought back to get within four, but missed three straight chances before Notre Dame pulled away.

Besides Falls' 22 (including 5 of 10 from 3-point range), Russell Carter contributed 17 and Tory Jackson had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists.

Our hats are off to Adrian Hill, who, playing in the final game of his Scarlet Knights career, almost single-handedly upset the Irish with 16 points, 18 boards, and outstanding defense.

The Irish, who finish the regular season with a surprising 23-6 mark, its best record in seven seasons under Coach Mike Brey, next play Thursday, March 8th in the Big East Tournament. After that, of course, is the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament, where the Irish will have Georgia (as in the Final Four in the Georgia Dome) on their mind.
