Top Ten Reasons to be Irish

10 Guinness and Harp—Brilliant!

9 Irish folk music—early U2 and Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" included!

8 St. Laurence O'Toole (and all the other Irish saints)—a saint for my brother as well as many others.

7 James Joyce (and all the other Irish writers). In Ireland, poets once ranked as high as kings.

6 Ireland (the country), from its natural beauty to its old churches and castles—Erin go Braugh.

5 Notre Dame's Fightin' Irish—that wonderful Irish-French connection will "win over all."

4 Peter O'Toole (and the other Irish actors). He was great in Beckett—and I needed at least one more O'Toole for the list!

3 St. Bridget (the other patron-ess of Ireland)—anyone who turned water into beer can't be all bad!

2 Our Lady of Knock—underrated apparitions—shows Ireland's love for her Mother.

1 St. Patrick—he "saved" civilization—and what a great holiday!

Number one reason: I am Catholic because I am Irish! And there is no better reason to be Irish. My ancestors have been Catholic for 1500 years through persecution, starvation by the Brits (famine my ear), and poverty. No people's faith on earth has matched the Irish for loyalty, fortitude and pure stubborness. Thank God I am Irish and Thank God i am Catholic and I am proud that statement is redundant!

JimAroo - Well said. As Sigmund Freud sighed, "There is one group of people that psychoanalysis does no good whatsoever. THE IRISH!" Obviously we have something that silly Sigmund did not. -Tom
