It's Tiger—Again

Tiger Woods wins U.S. Open 2008, in sudden deathTiger Woods, the 13-time major winner, and Rocco Mediate, the 45-year-old Cinderella story trying to become the oldest man to ever win the Open, battled 18 extra holes Monday to decide the U.S. Open championship and it still wasn't enough. Just like Sunday, Tiger caught Rocco with a birdie on 18, and finally beat his old friend when Rocco bogeyed the first sudden death hole to hand the hobbled, but preying Tiger the title.

After ten holes, it looked like Tiger's prowl to a 14th Major was in the bag. Woods was up by 3 with 8 to go, but Mediate, with some clutch birdie putts, caught and passed the world's #1 by 1 with only the 18th to go. But as was the case 13 times before when Tiger had a major lead after 54 holes, it was not to be for Mediate, who bowed out with his trademark smile still on his face. "That guy's so tough to beat!" Rocco exclaimed. "But at least I scared him."

Perhaps. But with his wife by his side and his daughter (and latest trophy) now in his arms, any fear Mr. Woods may have felt had long since vanished.
